Forest fires in the Land of Leopard watched from space

05 may 2009
Remote sensing of forest fires in the Amur leopard habitats was tested in Primorye at WWF’s initiative. This method helps combating forest fires on the spot.

The new perspective technique help early detect forest fires. Southwest Primorye was chosen as a model area for testing as the amount of forest fires is the highest in Primorskii Province. “We receive “the picture” of fire outbreaks based on interpreting of MODIS satellite space images twice a day from three different sources. Hot information is sent to field WWF’s coordinator to organize fire fighting work, - comments Yulia kalashnikova, GIS-specialist at WWF-Russia’s Amur branch.
