Industrial Development of the Pechora Basin: Is It Good or Bad?

At the meeting in Naryan-Mar, Nenets Autonomous Region, experts discussed environmental risks related to intensified oil fields development.

“EcoPechora 2008” Conference took place in the capital of Nenets Autonomous Region from 12 to 15 May. Over seventy representatives from the autonomous region Administration, from the Ministry of Natural Resources, from oil companies, Russian and foreign research and conservation organizations and institutions met altogether for discussions on the state of environment in the region and the Pechora Sea itself. WWF presented to the meeting its methodology for identification of the marine areas that most sensitive and vulnerable to oil spill pollution.

“The main aim of our meeting is to make experts assessments of potential ecological risks and to find out the ways to reduce them to minimum, - says the participant to «EcoPechora 2008» Conference, and the Head of WWF Russia Barents Sea branch Oleg Sutkaitis. – Such approach is very needed for the region where carbohydrates extraction develops so rapidly”.
